Instructor sharpens stylists’ barbering skills

Shawn Idom, owner and instructor of Hair Science Barber School, unpacks his tools and arranges them on a station. This is his normal routine: clippers, shears, disinfectant spray, combs, towels. The idea behind such preparation: Always be ready, so you never have to get ready.

Today’s students are stylists and the location is not the barbershop, but Ulta Beauty in the Diamond Mall. Idom continues unpacking as he prepares to teach a clipper cutting class at the company’s newest location in Anchorage.

After a short introduction, Idom demonstrates cutting techniques and allows each stylist to gain hands-on learning. A razor demonstration is the last technique of the session. “The razor is intimidating at first, but it soon becomes barbers’ favorite tool,” Idom said.

The stylists break for lunch after a review of the lesson, and Idom packs up: clippers, shears, disinfectant spray, combs, towels. This is his normal routine. As he closes his case, Idom flashes a smile.

“Never did I imagine that I would be giving a barbering class at a multi-billion dollar corporation,” he said. “But teaching a clipper cutting class at the new Ulta Beauty in the Diamond Mall proves God will make room for your gifts.”
